A Few Literary Inspirations

2016 was, well, a year! For me personally, it marked some changes and unexpected shifts, but mostly, it was about discovery. I am of the "why not" club, and traveled on solo day trips to places I've always wanted to visit, and found new parts of the city to explore. I met some people that, while in my life for a short time, made a profound impact. I did some much needed digging too. Digging into some things that still brought up negative memories, and delved into the not so nice parts of me. Difficult, but necessary, and in the end, worth it (and I'm still delving).
While exploring my external and internal worlds, I was introduced to some books that really helped with new perspectives. As some of you may know, I live with depression and anxiety, and sometimes these elements can cloud mood, motivation and perspective. I'm not above reading books that could be termed as self-help, for a little shove. More tools for the toolbox, right? And did these gems have some! Allow me to introduce you to the, all female authored, lineup of books that, simply, were immensely helpful:

-"Daring Greatly" by Brene Brown
simply put, a study on how vulnerability matters and how we need to value it and its powerful place in modern society
-"How To Be Interesting" by Jessica Hagy
a fun, graph filled little book on common sense ways to get back in touch with out inner uniqueness, and the fact that it's okay to explore those weird and wonderful aspects of ourselves
-"Big Magic" by Elizabeth Gilbert
I can't say enough about it. This book, along with the next two, had the most impact. Not only did this book reaffirm some things, it also stressed the importance of being realistic in one's creative life. Just because I'm not doing only photography and writing as my job, yet, thats okay! If I need to work while I'm putting in the work, I'm still an artist. Plus, I just love the way she sounds like your most honest, loving friend with the way she wrote it.
-"Start Where You Are" by Meera Lee Patel
a beautiful little journal-style book, that through visualization, meditations, exercises and wonderful quotes, helps one take their time plumbing the depths of what works and what doesn't. It encourages process, journey and her artwork is lovely!
-"The Desire Map-A Guide to Creating Goals With Soul" by Danielle Laporte
Oh, this book....while this too encourages journey and process, it also asks a question I've never considered until reading it-how do you want your life to FEEL? We all think about what we want in life, and how to get there, but to consider how we would like it to feel? Gobsmacked! This book is also journal/workbook style but it asks one to really look at those parts of ourselves we're ignoring, which is key. So far, it's been cathartic-I'll keep you posted once I've completed it. But, if you're looking for a fresh perspective-here it is! I really recommend this book!
And, thank you again for reading my posts. I really enjoy sharing photos and writing projects with you. I can't wait to see how this blog grows and morphs, and I hope you'l join me. Warm wishes for a safe, Happy New Year!
Thank you!
